A Letter from Founder Mel Auberty

Spring is in full swing at Blue Horse Sanctuary, and our herd is thriving.

As we celebrate our 5th anniversary as a non-profit, we’re especially grateful to reflect on how far we’ve come—made possible by your support.

We’re proud to celebrate our continued verification with Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries - a reflection of our commitment to the highest standards of care, safety and compassion. This recognition affirms the work we do every day to provide a lifelong, loving home for the animals in our care.

Keep reading to catch up on all of the latest happenings here at the sanctuary.

Warm Regards,

Mel Auberty

Sanctuary Resident Stories

Blanca and Boone

Boone and Blanca, our newest arrivals, share a remarkable journey of rescue and resilience. The pair—who had lived together for years—were spotted in a video from the Bowie auction barn, huddled in fear and just days away from being sent to slaughter. Their fate changed when Manda Kalimian, Founder of Rewilding America Now, intervened and secured their release.

Originally destined for open pastures in North Dakota, plans shifted when it became clear Blanca was not strong enough for the journey. Instead, both horses spent nearly a year rehabilitating until they found their forever home at Blue Horse Sanctuary on September 2025.

Boone and Blanca arrived without histories—two anonymous horses nearly lost to the pipeline. Today, they are thriving. Despite early concerns, Blanca adjusted beautifully to herd life, and together they’ve embraced their new chapter with strength and grace. Now they have space to roam, companionship, dedicated care, and most importantly—a happy ending.

Sanctuary Care and Operations

annual Spring Vet Check

One of the most important relationships a sanctuary can have is with their vet and we are very lucky to have Dr. Eric Moore, DMV, Signature Equine Hospital. Eric has unique skills, experience and a passion for caring for horses.

Every spring, each of our residents is given a thorough check up which includes vaccinations, a dental check, dewormer and a body condition score. Many of our residents have had prior injuries and many are quite elderly. Helping to catch potential issues early and ensuring that each horse remains healthy, comfortable, and thriving is a cornerstone of our care here at the sanctuary.

tHE SAFE ACT

Did you know that over 26,000 equines were shipped to Canada and Mexico last year for slaughter? It is time we stopped considering equines as commodities and find humane alternatives for elderly and unwanted horses and donkeys.

The SAFE Act – Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act (HR 1661/S 776) is currently in the 109th Congress aiming to permanently prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption and their export for that purpose. The bill has significant bipartisan support and you can view the full text and status of the bill on SAFE Act.

JOin us for our annual open house fall 2026

Guests will have the opportunity to visit the Sanctuary, observe the herd, and better understand what daily life looks like here.

Details will be shared as the season approaches.

**A rescue focuses on saving animals from immediate danger, while a sanctuary provides them with a permanent, lifelong home where they can live safely without the expectation of adoption or relocation.
